Got a chance to dine here with the infamous Brett N of Yelp Tampa fandom. I insisted on a more authentic Tampa cuisine, but Brett wouldn't tolerate it. He pretty much threatened me with going to Samurai Blue instead. As we all know, going anywhere with Brett is like going to the beach with "Leo DiCap" (as Brett refers to him), nobody's paying attention to his friend off to the side... no matter how many rock hard abs they have. We stroll up and I was blinded by the paparazzi cameras flashing everywhere. One of them tried to grab Brett's blingin' chain right off of his neck, but Brett slapped his hand away and said, "get off my carats!" then proceeded to make Bugs Bunny chomping noises at the guy. The owner of the restaurant came out to shake Brett's hand afterwards, but got nervous on the way and fainted. Next thing I know, the mayor is giving Brett the key to the city and the kitchen staff was lifting him up on a chair like it was a Jewish wedding ceremony... What?!? So as it turns out, none of the above actually happened except for the fact that Brett and I went to dinner. Glitz and glam aside, Samurai Blue is a top notch sushi spot. Even the garlic tuna nigiri was a cut above. Seeing Brett's previews review before hand, I knew we'd be ordering the Tempura Lobster Roll and the Blue Crab Rangoon. If you'd like to follow our lead, I'd suggest adding the Blue Moon Roll and a shumai dumpling to round things out. Top it off with the aforementioned nigiri and you'll have the perfect amount of food for two people with a decent variety of flavors as well. I personally enjoyed the Blue Moon to the Tempura Lobster but that seems to be a personal preference. Everything we tasted was excellent and the service struck that perfect balance between being taken care of but not doted on. The inside of the building is beautiful and the crazy high ceilings with the exposed brick allow you to peer into the history of the structure. Next time in Ybor City, I'll have to enjoy a proper Cuban Sandwich, but at the same time, I'll definitely be coming back for sushi as well.
